Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Studio Manali · Atelier & Studio Practice

About Studio Manali & the Atelier

What is Studio Manali?
Studio Manali is a working studio–atelier based in the Himalayan valley of Manali. It operates as a site for sustained visual practice, material study, and site-responsive work. The studio hosts structured ateliers, long-term studio practice, and limited studio pathways for artists working with seriousness and continuity.

What is meant by “atelier” at Studio Manali?
An atelier at Studio Manali refers to a structured period of guided formation. Each atelier is defined by its scope, mediums, methods, and outcomes, and unfolds through daily studio practice, field engagement, critique, and documentation. While each atelier has a distinct focus, all operate within shared standards of discipline, attentiveness, and responsibility.

How many ateliers does Studio Manali offer?
Ateliers are offered seasonally. Each is announced individually with its own structure, duration, and application process. Some ateliers may share methodological foundations while addressing different materials, scales, or contexts.

Who the Ateliers Are For

Who typically applies to Studio Manali’s ateliers?
Participants come from varied backgrounds, including fine art, design, architecture, craft, and independent practice. The common factor is readiness for sustained, observation-led work and the ability to engage with daily studio discipline.

Is prior formal training required?
Formal training is not required. What matters is demonstrated engagement with practice, attentiveness to material and process, and the capacity to work consistently over time.

Are beginners accepted?
Applicants at earlier stages may be considered if their work and application demonstrate readiness for intensive practice and technical development. Each application is reviewed on its own terms.

Structure, Practice & Daily Cadence

What does a working day typically involve?
Days are organised around long blocks of studio work, supported by demonstrations, field studies, and critique. The emphasis is on continuity of attention rather than segmented activity.

Is attendance required every day?
Yes. All ateliers are designed as continuous formations. Daily presence supports progression, shared studio responsibility, and cumulative learning.

How are critiques conducted?
Critiques are regular and integrated into the working day. They address observation, material decisions, structure, and clarity of execution.

Materials, Equipment & Documentation

What does the studio provide?
The studio provides shared infrastructure necessary for the atelier in session, including easels, drawing boards, lighting, scaffolding, wall substrates, and base materials for site or mural work.

What do participants provide?
Participants bring personal tools such as brushes, sketchbooks, and preferred pigments. A detailed materials list is shared upon admission.

Is documentation required?
Yes. Documentation is a core part of all ateliers. Participants maintain records of studies, material tests, process notes, and completed work. Documentation is reviewed alongside studio output.

Location, Life & Practical Considerations

Where do ateliers take place?
Ateliers take place in Burwa and surrounding areas in the Manali valley. The landscape, built environment, and climate are treated as active working conditions.

Where do participants stay?
Accommodation is at the discretion of the particiants. Upon confirmation of admission to an Atelier, the studio provides a list of trusted partner homestays and guesthouses within walking distance of the studio.

Are meals included?
No meals are included. Meals are charged seperately for the duration of the program and arranged through accommodation partners that align with the working day.

How does altitude affect the work?
The valley’s altitude, light, and weather influence both daily life and material behaviour. Participants are advised to prepare accordingly especially with regards to clothing in cold climates.

Health, Safety & Conduct

What health and safety measures are in place?
Orientation includes safety induction, altitude guidance, and local briefings. Participants are expected to work attentively and responsibly, particularly during field and site-based activities.

Is insurance required?
Yes. Participants are responsible for arranging health, travel, and emergency insurance.

What conduct is expected in the studio?
Respect for the studio, peers, local customs, artisans, and shared spaces is essential. Participants sign a studio care and conduct agreement at orientation.

Admissions & Applications

How are applications reviewed?
Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis. Selection considers readiness for sustained practice, clarity of intent, and alignment with the atelier’s scope.

What does an application include?
Applications are submitted as a single PDF containing a portfolio, statement of intent, curriculum vitae, and program preference. Requirements are outlined in the Application Checklist.

Is there an application deadline?
Each atelier has a recommended submission window to allow for review, preparation, and travel planning. Cohorts close once filled.

Fees, Support & Certification

Are scholarships or fee reductions available?
The studio currently does not provide any scholarships. Patrons who are interested in funding may get in touch with us via mail.

What certification is provided?
Participants who complete all required work and documentation receive official certification from Studio Manali. Documentation reflects both output and process.

Studio Pathways (Outside the Ateliers)

Does Studio Manali offer apprenticeships or studio roles?
Yes. In addition to ateliers, Studio Manali offers limited studio pathways that involve deeper responsibility and longer-term engagement.

What studio pathways exist?

  • Studio Assistantship – Practical involvement in daily studio work and production

  • Work Exchange Residency – Time-bound contribution exchanged for studio access and mentorship

  • Apprenticeship – Long-term, skill-based formation through sustained studio work

  • Studio Fellowship – Selective, practice-focused engagement with defined responsibilities

How are these roles different from ateliers?
Studio pathways involve greater responsibility, longer hours, and deeper integration into studio operations. They are not instructional programs and are offered selectively.

How does one apply for a studio pathway?
Studio pathways are not always open. When available, they are announced separately. Expressions of interest may be sent with a portfolio and brief note outlining availability and intent.
